In case you haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, Newsweek is running great online exclusive about young adults using humor to fight cancer:

A Malignant Melanoma Walks Into A Bar…

“Cancer kills more young people than any other disease, and survival rates have not improved in more than 30 years for people in their 20s and 30s. How some patients are using humor to fight back.”

Groups like I’m Too Young For This (home of The Stupid Cancer Show) and Planet Cancer are filling a void for 20 and 30 year old cancer patients with their blend of laughter and support.

Here’s more of what we had to say about Newsweek’s piece:

Great piece. When my 32-year old husband, Jonathan, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in March ‘09, our lives came to a halt while we tried to wrap our heads around such an unexpected diagnosis. Humor is an important part of what has gotten us through such a challenging situation.

I was so surprised by the lack of support and resources – and medical research – targeted to cancer patients and survivors in their 20s and 30s. Groups like Stupid Cancer and Planet Cancer are filling that void in critical way.

We’re a motivated generation completed committed to getting involved online and off, using our advocacy experience to find a cure for cancer across the board. For 30-year olds like Jonathan, this is about more than getting to remission. Our goal is a lasting cure that gets us to a “new normal” for the next 70 years. And being able to laugh together through all of this craziness is the only way to get there.

Thanks for getting the conversation going about young adults and cancer,

Courtney
